Paint by numbers is easiest when you prepare the workspace before opening the first paint pot. Choose a flat, well-lit surface, protect it with paper and keep a cup of clean water and a soft cloth nearby.
Start with a quick check
Unroll the canvas and compare the paint numbers with the printed guide. Arrange the pots in numerical order and keep every lid closed until you need that colour.
Work from large areas to small details
Use the largest brush for broad areas, the medium brush for edges and the smallest brush for fine shapes. Many painters prefer to work from the top of the canvas downward to reduce accidental smudging.
Use thin, controlled layers
Acrylic paint should cover the number without flooding neighbouring sections. If a light colour remains transparent after drying, add a second thin coat. If paint feels too thick, add one or two drops of clean water and mix gently.
Finish one colour at a time
Completing all visible sections of one colour reduces brush cleaning and helps you see progress. Before closing a pot, wipe paint from the rim so the lid can seal properly.
There is no need to rush. A short, regular painting session is often more enjoyable than trying to finish the canvas at once.
